Article Abstract:
Since the demand for personal computers (PCs) has decreased, the PC market is in a state of decline. The 'early adapter' segment of the market is saturated, yet the PC industry has not developed products for the mainstream of people who want computers for other than job-related tasks. Now that MIS departments are taking a greater role in PC purchasing, they are buying components of office automation systems whose buying cycle is measured in years rather than months, consequently slowing market growth. Optimists predict products will be improved and growth will resume; pessimists say the PC market is deed and an industry shift will occur in the direction of networked workstations.

Article Abstract:
Productivity software has entered a new era where few standards last long because of rapid industry changes. Lotus, with its integration of data base and graphics capabilities with spreadsheet operations, has automated work done by analysts and clerks. Lightyear, a decision support product from Lightyear Corp., Mountain View, California, is a tool used for making complex decisions involving qualitative and quantitative factors. Many possibilities remain to be explored in financial accounting software.
