Quick Disk Drives - Fast Access at Prices Below Floppies
Article Abstract:
The high sales of microcomputers have resulted in high sales of floppy disk drives. Research has centered on making disks smaller with high density. Mitsumi Electric has the QDD, the Quick Disk Drive, a high-performance, compact disk drive. The major advantage of floppy disk drives are quick recovery rerecording. A major problem is extra friction from extended run time. Cassettes are less expensive, but have high bit-error rates. The Quick Disk Drive has an eight second access time and has a thickness of three mm. It is well designed for home computers and musical instruments. It consists of CPU, I-O interface and mechanism. There is a single-motor drive for each component. It is incompatible with IBM. Diagrams of the Quick Disk Drive are included.

The Optical File System As An Alternative to Paper: What It Is and How It Works
Article Abstract:
Optical file systems provide an efficient and organized method for recording and storing information. These systems are offered in a play-back only, non-erasable or re-record and erasable form. They contain a file controller, optical disk, graphics display terminal, keyboard, scanners, printer, retrieval unit and communication devices. The optical file system can be used as a stand-alone system or as part of a local area network. They provide a savings in space, high-speed retrieval of data, immediate access to files and instant editing of information. Charts and diagrams illustrate the optical file system.
