Women in Management - Some Progress, but More Is Needed
Article Abstract:
The number of women in management positions is increasing at a slow rate largely because it is taking a long time to change men's attitudes. Some barriers that remain for women in business are exclusion from the informal community power structure, the sterotypical image of being emotional and illogical, laws giving each state the authority to handle its sex discriminatory laws, and the continuation of the supportive role status. Affirmative action helps women because it requires goals rather than quotas. Support for affirmative action is increasing outside the realm of the Federal government. Areas where job opportunities now lie include middle management, sales, consulting in office automation, and using word processing skills to start entrepreneurial careers.
