Sony and Hitachi Develop Optical Disk File Systems
Article Abstract:
With help from the Kokusai Deshin Denwa Co. (KDD), Sony has developed an optical disk file system that is re-programmable. Shipments of the disk to the KDD telecommunications company will begin in late October 1985. Hitachi has developed a similar optical disk, with slightly higher storage capacity and reduced noise. Both use a recording layer made of terbium, iron and cobalt. The Sony disks are thirty cm with 43,750 tracks, while the Hitachi disks are twelve cm with 17,000 tracks per side. The Sony drive with two controllers has a 2G bit capacity. The Hitachi disk, for which there is no commercial prototype, stores 550Mbytes. A picture of each drive is shown.
