Team tools
Article Abstract:
MKS' $899-per-seat Web Integrity and Starbase's $2,500-per-server StartTeam emerge as the best among six workflow management tools evaluated. Both are excellent choices for programming-intensive sites where developers' roles are clearly defined. Web Integrity's strength is in its extensive use of Windows NT's abilities to create users in groups and assigning them permissions. StarTeam has a lot of good features and is very customizable and powerful. NetObjects' $995 TeamFusion uses a single, user-friendly interface to access its document management, Web authoring, previewing and staging. Compared to the standalone Fusion version, however, this workflow tool needs more work. Site Technologies' $1,995 SiteMaster is the only tool among the six that provides specific Web advertising features. Microsoft's $1,239 SiteServer 3.0 is one of the comprehensive tools in the market. UserLand's $899 Frontier 5.0 draws from its heritage as a scripting environment but includes Web authoring scripts and enhancements.

Win 95? Not in my office
Article Abstract:
Microsoft has released its Windows 95 operating system. Although it has a very attractive new interface and runs multimedia applications well, Microsoft already has plans for its successor, Windows NT. Those who were attracted by the power of a 32-bit operating system will be disappointed with Windows 95, which includes a substantial amount of 16-bit code to retain backwards compatibility. Once hardware has been upgraded to handle Windows 95, Windows NT Workstation 3.51 is the next logical step. NT Workstation will provide a true 32-bit operating system, and significant performance improvements over Windows 95. NT also includes OpenGL for multimedia developers. The graphics library offers dramatic 3D rendering features. NT is portable, unlike Windows 95. NT is able to run on Intel processors, DEC Alpha, Power PC and MIPS machines.

Pentium MMX delivers
Article Abstract:
Intel's Pentium MMX microprocessors provide multimedia developers with enormous performance enhancements as well as multimedia extensions that can be used to improve the performance of processor- or multimedia-intensive applications. While standard business applications will obtain slight performance gains from MMX chips, the real MMX benefits can be noted in training titles, presentation graphics software, entertainment titles and interactive kiosks. Benchmark tests found 20% to 25% performance improvements on Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Director 6 applications when using with MMX-enhanced Pentium chips. Entertainment titles optimized for MMX technology also offered impressive capabilities, though no benchmarking was possible.
