The Politics of Promotion
Article Abstract:
A self-administered test of ten questions is offered to determine one's attitude toward office politics and power. Politics is knowing how to use relationships, and power is getting things done. Power and politics are more important than performance in getting promoted and also more likely the cause for firing. Achievement is not so important as the visibility enjoyed in working on a high-priority job. Early opinions of an employee tend to persist. The authority of a high position is not necessarily synonymous with power. Keeping one's goals aligned with those of the organization, attracting a powerful mentor, and having self confidence backed by credibility are some of the attributes described that gain points.
