Who says Nintendo has to win?
Article Abstract:
Children need to be provided with technology tools, not toys and computer games. By teaching children how to create music and video, they are empowered. Currently, there are many computer tools for creating art and graphics, although they are geared towards professionals and have steep learning curves. Some, however, bring the technology to common people, using devices such as Wizards, templates and outlines to guide the user in their design efforts. The helpful tools are more than a crutch, they promote learning by doing and give the user valuable lessons in presentation skills. Desktop music composition is another strong tool, since it is non real-time and provides for experimentation not available in the analog world. Expanding interfaces and software capabilities will get more people involved in music and multimedia, and promote more widespread artistic literacy. Given these tools, children will naturally become more interested in creative projects, and maybe less interested in violent computer games.

Multimedia hard drives
Article Abstract:
Multimedia technology has created a big demand for hard drive storage space. Many computers are now shipping with 1GB drives, and some multimedia developers use machines with drives of up to 9GB. Most developers will need an external or removable drive to enhance their internal capacity. A RAID system provides the highest throughput. This type of system connects multiple drives on a single address. Subsystems with hot-swappable modular drives are especially useful for multimedia developers. Most high-end Macs have SCSI drives, which are necessary for most digital video applications. SCSI adapters are also widely available for PCs. Features to consider when purchasing hard drives include the sustained transfer rate, access time, cache buffer and formatted capacity. Also, many newer fast drives use magneto-resistive thin-film heads, which are smaller than older drives and allow more data to exist on each square inch of disk space.

Multimedia revolution creates, destroys jobs
Article Abstract:
Professional multimedia requires training, just as any other software tool does. Many software companies would like people to think their products will make multimedia accessible to everyone, but just as desktop publishing packages cannot make people graphic artists by themselves, multimedia software cannot make people video and audio specialists. Quality drops initially whenever a new technology is introduced because it takes time to learn the tools. Multimedia will change the way video is produced, and it will lead to many technical and semi-technical jobs being lost in the entertainment industry. The technology will also create new categories of professionals, but these professionals will still need some innate artistic talent.
