Windows digital video cards ride the PCI bus
Article Abstract:
Truevision's $1,000 Bravado 1000 digital video bus master may be the best PCI-based video capture card on the market, providing users with transparent software utilities and allowing users to handle CD-quality audio and video playback at data rates faster than 2.9 Mbps. The Bravado 1000 receives the best review out of five digital video cards evaluated. Truevision's $6,495 Targa 2000 Pro full-motion video board also scores well, providing users with enhanced effects speeds and Adobe Premiere transition acceleration built-in. The Targa 2000 can play video and control desktops simultaneously on computer displays and NTSC monitors. Digital Processing Systems' $2,995 DPS Perception video recorder also receives positive reviews, as it produced the highest playback and data capture rates of all the products evaluated. Perception has a less than 1% differential gain and a differential phase less than one degree.

The last picture tube: multimedia LCD projectors
Article Abstract:
In Focus's $9,999 LitePro 580 is the top rated of 18 multimedia LCD projectors reviewed. The reviewed multimedia projectors typically integrate 640-by-480-pixel polysilicon or amorphous-silicon LCD panel technology with a lens systems, bright lights, built-in audio system, remote controls, and support of both computer and NTSC still and video input. The projectors generally offer superior image quality to LCD panels and presentation monitors. The tested units were evaluated on their overall image, computer display, video playback and audio quality; line-doubling technology; parameter adjustments; inputs and outputs; remote controls; and ergonomics. Most of the top units have polysilicon LCDs. These include the LitePro, Hitachi's $8,995 CP-L500, and Polaroid's $9,495 Polaview 105. Apollo's $9,995 Explorer QE575 was the lowest-rated LCD projector.

Spigot Power AV
Article Abstract:
Radius Inc's $999 Spigot Power AV card for AV-series Macintoshes offers superior performance, at a price much lower than other comparable cards. The board takes advantage of the AV Mac's built-in audio and video capture features, and uses a less expensive codec chip. The Zoran 050 codec ship rivals the higher-end chips used in other more expensive cards. The card is able to access the video and audio circuitry of the Mac AV machine through the Digital Audio Video slot. Instead of using a separate breakout box, users plug video and audio sources directly into the AV Mac. It is capable of 10:1 compression, which is adequate for on-screen multimedia delivery, or CD-ROM production. Spigot Power AV also brings some media interchange capability. It comes with the Fusion Recorder capture and playback software and compositing software.
