Amazon targets 160 million French speakers

Amazon has launched its third European site in France in Sep 2000. The move is aimed at targeting the global French-speaking market which the company estimates at 160 million people. Amazon.fr began with four products, namely, books, CDs, DVDs and videos. In terms of the level of orders, the online marketer is well on its way to holding a leadership position in the industry. A Media Metrix survey published in Dec revealed that amazon.co.uk was the most visited shopping site in Europe, followed by amazon.de and amazon.com.

Lands' End plans Web-only entry into France, no catalogs

Lands' End will use the Internet to mark its entry into the French market by Sep 2000 but may add a paper catalog later, according to Sam Taylor, the company's international VP. The company had installed Web sites to its catalog operations in the UK, Japan and Germany in Nov 1999, giving it an online presence in the four largest markets in the world. Taylor added that online apparel sales would boom over the next five years, making it important to get the Lands' End brand established online.

Prices plummet as German and French telcos go to war

Phone rates have declined dramatically in Europe's two biggest markets, France and Germany. In France, prices have plunged by between 30% and 35% in the past six months as France Telecom's competitors have captured a 13% market share. In Germany, Deutsche Telekom's competitors are challenging DT's hold on the market: MobilCom has begun offering a monthly flat rate for phone and Internet service in nine German cities and AOL has started charging about $7 for Internet access.
