Article Abstract:
The School of Engineering building at De Montfort University, Leicester, England, is achieving its low energy consumption goal. The building, which was completed in 1993, is the biggest building with natural ventilation in Europe. Much of the interior maintains a comfortable temperature, and the daylit rooms are pleasant, although the offices on the top floor tend to become overheated, and the staff find the open-plan arrangement here noisy and impractical for study and tutorials. The unusual exterior architecture is attractive, and the spacious, airy central concourse is exciting.

University challenge
Article Abstract:
The British government is encouraging the growth of universities. Student numbers are expected to rise by 47% by 2000 and they will all be catered for in exisiting institutions. The Higher Education Funding Council for England favours the efficient use of existing buildings, as measured by the concept of space charging but refurbishment and new building will also be necessary. There is an urgent need for student housing and planning for flexible campuses.
