Business grows for yards that refit, refurbish
Article Abstract:
The renovation of old tugs, cruise ships and fishing boats and installing luxurious living accomodations on them are increasingly becoming a trend for shipyards. For instance, Palmer Johnson's shipyard in Savannah, GA, may seasonably be doing several large retrofits that could take more than a year to finish at a cost of more than a million dollars. Its refit center can accomodate boats with lengths up to 205 ft with an undercover building and a 1,160-ton Syncrolift that can haul boats larger than 200 ft.

S2/Tiara winds up boat recall program
Article Abstract:
S2 Tiara Yachts Inc, a boat manufacturer based in Holland, MI, has voluntarily begun recalling several models of its Pursuit and Tiara boat brands in 1999. As of Oct 2000. the company reports that it has completed the inspection and, if necessary, the repair of most of the 813 affected boats. These boats were found to collect stagnant water that corrode the aluminum gas tanks, thus causing leaks. The problem was caused by water not properly routed to the boat's bilge pump.
