Rivertown fold 4 catalogs, loses president

Catalog firm Rivertown Trading Co announced that it was closing four of its 11 catalogs and the resignation of its president, Donna Avery. The decision to close its underperforming catalogs will result in the layoff of 10% of its staff. Rivertown parent Dayton-Hudson, however, said they will try find other positions for its displaced employees in other divisions. The catalogs to be closed are Audio, Circa, Daily Planet and Well & Good.

West Coast investors buy Micro Warehouse

Computer product cataloger Micro Warehouse Inc has been acquired by a group of high-profile investors for about $725 million. Some of the prominent investors are Hollywood power broker Michael Ovitz, Northwest Airlines chmn Gary Wilson and former IBM CFO Jerome York. Micro shareholders will receive $19 per share, significantly higher than the stock's $13 average price per share. Financing for the deal was provided by Credit Suisse First Boston and CIBC World Markets.
