Oil engineering contractor Christiani & Nielsen managing director Alan Crane will become the chairman of the UK Construction Confederation in June 1998. Two of Crane's main objectives will be to promote the government's New Deal initiative within the construction industry, while encouraging the industry to adopt guidelines suggested by the government taskforce. Over 200 firms have signed up to New Deal in 1998, which is aimed at helping the long-term unemployed back to work. Crane will seek to raise standards within the construction industry during his term of office as chairman.

Treasury think-tank to lead reform
Article Abstract:
The UK government is planning to launch the Government Construction Clients Forum on Mar 21, 1997. This venture, part of moves to reorganise government procurement strategy, is designed to allow the government to communicate in a unified way with the construction industry. The body will discuss construction procurement policy and look at ideas for best practice on the 6 billion pounds sterling construction programme. It will also take a collective view on initiatives.
