Consolidators face challenges
Article Abstract:
The consolidation trend within the commercial roofing industry is expected to accelerate with the entry of a new, powerful 'roll up' company: TECTA America Inc. TECTA has announced its consolidation of 10 prominent roofing contractors that collectively generate almost $175 million in annual sales and employ 1,200 people. It also expects to add more member companies in the near future. TECTA and other consolidators face challenges in handling labor shortages, the regulatory explosion and even projected price increases and shortages of roofing asphalts.

Contractors battle locked specs
Article Abstract:
Roofing contractors bidding on public projects continue to experience problems with closed or locked specifications, bid rigging and other illegal bidding practices. The problem has become nationwide. While there are situations where proprietary specifications can be justified, it is frequently too time consuming and expensive for the contractor to battle proprietary specifications when they are not justified. It is not surprising, therefore, that some of the largest US roofing contractors have focused exclusively on private work and avoided bidding on public projects altogether.

Roll-ups: are you in or out?
Article Abstract:
Roofing contractors, especially those who generate gross revenues of $4 million or more a year, will have to consider their market positions and options carefully if rollup, buy-and-build companies become entrenced in the business. The trend toward consolidation in the roofing industry has begun, and there are some very good reasons for contractors to consolidate. This is evidenced in a deal entered into by Centimark Corp, the nation's largest roofing contractor, to become building products supplier Johns Manville's first no-dollar-limit roofing contractor.
