FTC: advertisers spent more as cigarette sales dropped
Article Abstract:
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) observed that cigarette advertising and promotional spending increased markedly in 1998 despite a decline in cigarette sales over 1997 levels. The observation was made in the FTC's annual report to Congress. The report also found that the five largest cigarette manufacturers collectively increased their advertising and promotional expenditures by 19% from $5.66 billion in 1997 to $6.73 billion in 1998. The cigarette industry also spent $125,000 on Internet advertising in 1998.
