Ex-Mowlem boss brokers partnering

Ex-Mowlem chief executive John Marshall has formed Supply Chain Partnering with colleagues Mike Wallis and Simon Pinkney. The new business venture aims to help in the selection of subcontractors and suppliers for clients and contractors. Under the system subcontractors will tender for each job and receive computer printouts providing detailed information on the client's business. The Contrack software package provides a monthly update. The majority of work is expected to come from construction clients initially.

Andrew Gay is the new chairman and chief executive of Drake & Scull, an independent M&E contractor. He was previously managing director of Trafalgar Houses's major projects division. Drake & Scull went into the red in 1994 due to bad debts, but Gay expects the company to back in the black in six months. He has appointed a new managing director Colin Baker, who will co-ordinate the four regional offices, and has set up new profit centres.

Sir John Egan, the chief executive of BAA, the airport authority, aims to reduce the company's construction costs by 30% during the next five years. He believes that BAA must become a world class builder with the aim of designing each building completely before construction begins. The company already keeps within 20% of the final cost at the concept stage and Sir John aims to reduce that margin to 10%.
