Software vendors on track for postal hike
Article Abstract:
Postal software vendors are on track for new postal rates slated to be enacted on January 10, 1998 as the US Postal Service's Presort, Accuracy and Evaluation tests remain on schedule. The tests are performed on postal presort vendors, which should but are not required to pass PAVE tests each year instituted by the USPS. PAVE tests guarantee that software meets the regulations of the post service and match any changes taking place at the agency. However, USPS has not certified as many vendors as it thought it would have now due to a newly-unveiled automated scoring process.

NJ stalls plan to turn licenses into smart cards
Article Abstract:
A new legislation that would allow standard driver's licenses to be replaced with electronic smart cards is expected to be introduced in fall 1998. Called AccessNJ, the legislation calls for the replacement of state driver's licenses with smart cards, which appear like credit cards but are embedded with microchips that can perform several functions. The bill, S. 1158, was passed in June 1998 by the State Transportation Committee but was pulled from the Senate board list by two Republicans due to oppositions from privacy advocates, banks and credit card firms.
