FTC staff seeks approval to regulate Internet privacy
Article Abstract:
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has asked the US Congress to grant it the power to formulate rules regarding Internet privacy for online service providers. The FTC appeal follows the release of the final report of the agency's Advisory Committee on Online Access and Security. The report states that, despite the fact that 90% of all major Web sites devoted to e-commerce have a posted policy on privacy, only about 20% abides by standards that the FTC considers sufficient to protect consumers.
