QVC, H.O.T. running close race to profitability in Germany

Shopping channels H.O.T. and QVC Inc are running a close race in terms of profitability as they continue to turn out an impressive performance in the German market. QVC had sales of $110 million while H.O.T. made a pre- tax profit of $11 million for 1999. QVC's biggest single seller is jewelry, with 60% of the products sold by the firm being sourced from German suppliers.

Germans break ranks, back country-of-destination law in Internet transactions

The German Direct Marketing Assn has endorsed the application of country- of-destination criterion in international electronic-commerce transactions. The German DMA's opposition puts it in opposition to the US, the UK and, to some degree, the European Commission. The assn justifies its position by saying that only the country-of-origin law can give the consumer adequate protection.
