Sailboat market sees fair winds
Article Abstract:
The sailboat industry reported that it achieved a 16% increase in output for 1999 at the Miami International Boat Show. The 16% increase resulted in the production of 21,169 units compared to 18,213 in 1998. It represents the third largest production increase since the 1980s. The production increase is attributed to the strong economy and advances in technology which have enabled manufacturers to build small boats at reasonable prices.

Competition is more than lowest prices
Article Abstract:
Several factors have to be considered by marine retailers to retain market share in the face of proliferating large, chain discount stores. While the most common reaction of retailers is to lower their prices, a better way is to make popular items such as paints and antifreeze as loss leaders. This promotion can then be tied up to other services offered by the retailer. In addition, the boating lifestyle should be emphasized in marketing activities.
