Avon, MA-based marine engine and generator designer/manufacturer Westerbeke Corp's founder, John H. Westerbeke, died on May 8, 2000, at a hospital in Milton, MA. Westerbeke remained highly active in the company's operations up to a week before his death even if he had ceded active corporate control to his son, John H. Westerbeke, Jr. Westerbeke Sr's compact diesel propulsion units for small recreational watercraft as well as his engine and generator concepts for non-marine applications have attracted widespread interest.

Avon, MA-based marine engine and recreational marine air conditioning product designer, manufacturer and marketer Westerbeke Corp has reported net sales of $26.2 million for FY 1998. The figure represents a 6% increase over net sales of $24.6 million generated by the company in FY 1997. Westerbeke reported a 19% decrease in net profit from $798,900 in FY 1997 to $643,500 in FY 1998. The decline was attribute primarily to an 18.6% increase in selling, general and administrative expenses in FY 1998.

Avon, MA-based Westerbeke Corp ranked 64th in a list of the top 100 business enterprises in Massachusetts that was prepared by the Boston Globe publication in its May 16, 2000, issue. The newspaper also ranked Westerbeke 11th in the manufacturing/industrial category. Boston Globe's annual Globe 100 listing ranks companies that have been publicly traded for all of the preceding year prior to the publication of the listing, as well as other criteria.
