Mailers surprised at increases, old data
Article Abstract:
The plan by the US Postal Service to increase its rates by an average of 7.7% effective Jan 2001 has been opposed by catalogers and Standard-A mailers. The proposal would involve high increases for all categories of mail used by direct marketers while the average First-Class rate will increase by only 3.6%. As a result, direct marketers are planning to send fewer catalogs in 2000 and will instead focus on electronic commerce.

Mailers protest proposed rate hike
Article Abstract:
The Mailers Council is against the US Postal Service's plan to implement a double-digit rate increase during the summer of 2001, which the council says would make mail service expensive to many business mailers. The association has already sent letters to the USPS' Board of Governors and the House committee that oversees postal service. The trade groups says the proposed rate increase would reduce the volume of mailings in the succeeding months. It adds that small businesses that operate on thin margins cannot absorb two postge rate increases within a 13-month period.
