FTC in do-not-call list talks
Article Abstract:
The Federal Trade Commission has announced its plan to create a national do-not-call list in response to numerous complaints from consumers. The plan is part of its review of the Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR). The present TSR requires individual companies to maintain lists of people who do not want to be called by the companies. Among the types of businesses outside of the scope of TSR are insurance companies, political organizations, nonprofits and intrastate marketers.

No action anytime soon on telemarketing bill
Article Abstract:
Congress will not give high priority on a bill that would impose new restrictions on telemarketers. The proposed legislation, which would amend the Telemarketing and Consumer Fraud and Abuse Prevention Act, would prevent telemarketers from calling during dinner hours. Telemarketers would also have to notify consumers that they have the right to be placed on either the Direct Marketing Assn's do-not-call list or a state do-not- call list. Telemarketers must obtain such lists on a regular basis and reconcile them with their own lists.
