No 'right' decision
Article Abstract:
Authorities say that there is no 'right' docking system and no 'right' decision on materials to use for marinas because each of the US' 12,000 marinas is site specific and therefore displays its own challenges and peculiarities. A dock facilities manufacturer noted that all marinas must be designed according to the demands of their location, which includes wind, wave and weather conditions and topography. However, experts are in consensus that there are a number of key determinants in the marina planning process, including selection of the right manufacturer and the choice of the appropriate materials.

Drystack: 'structures of necessity'
Article Abstract:
Increasing regulatory restrictions on wetland development, the shrinking availability of land with water frontage and the growth in boating are forcing many marina operators to built five- or six-level-high drystack storage facilities. Drystack storage is proving to be very viable alternative to wet slips because it allows operators to store a maximum number of boats with a minimum amount of storage space. It also provides boat owners with better security, lower insurance costs and convenience.

Quick payback fueled growth of dry storage
Article Abstract:
Drystack boat storage is an old concept in the US that goes back to the 1950s, when marinas used forklifts to stack light boats on home-made racks built of wood or steel. During the 1970s, the development of forklifts that were specifically designed to handle boats and enable them to be launched and retrieved at the water's edge facilitated drystack storaging and the business' popularity began to increase. Drystack storage is a lucrative, thriving operation in 2000.
