Pressure points
Article Abstract:
Some observers claim that structured-wall plastic pipes, which are gradually replacing clay and concrete pipes for use in foul water sewers, cannot withstand high-pressure water jetting. This has prompted Thames Water and Anglian Water to ban contractors from using structured-wall plastic pipes until the results of jetting tests are obtained. Manufacturer Hepworth has also responded to the debate, launching a pipe which is extruded from three polymers and claimed to withstand very high jetting pressures.

Drain reaction: suggestions that the new generation of ribbed plastic pipes may not be up to the high-pressure jetting and rodding that foul-water pipes have to face are causing concern in the industry
Article Abstract:
The performance properties of new ribbed plastic pipes are starting to be questioned. Experts believe that because they are so lightweight and flexibile they will not be able to stand the wear and tear imposed on them when used for foul water sewers in hosuing estates where they would be subject ot regular stresses and blockage clearance. The BSI now wants to establish a code of practice to limit pressures to 2500 psi.

Water giants veto ribbed pipes
Article Abstract:
Thames Water and Anglian are preventing the use of structured-wall plastic pipes for drains and sewers by contractors and house builders. They believe that these pipes could be damaged if high-pressure water jetting is used to remove blockages. The pipes are recognised be the Water Services Association, but the water companies still have the right to prohibit their use.
