DPPA ruling sinks with marketers
Article Abstract:
The Supreme Court ruling that Congress has the right to enact the Driver's Privacy Protection Act of 1994 (DPPA) will adversely affect list managers and direct marketers. The Act puts restrictions on the purchase of information contained in driver's licenses and vehicle registrations. The ruling on the DPPA will not have a significant effect on direct marketers in the short term because data will be available until June 1, 2000 and can be used for a number of years.

Marketers urge Congress to delay DPPA
Article Abstract:
Direct marketers have asked Congress to postpone the implentation of the Driver Privacy Protection Act until it assesses the effect of such law on commercial marketers that are dependent upon such records. The act, which will take effect on Jun 1, 2000, requires states to only make available DMV records of individuals who opted to release such data for any purpose except law enforcement. DMV records are vital source of information for direct marketers.
