OSHA's latest attack on asphalt
Article Abstract:
Roofing contractors generally consider asphalt fumes to be a nuisance. Furthermore, breathing the fumes can be a respiratory hazard. The American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists has recommended that the Permissible Exposure Level for asphalt fumes be lowered from 5.0 microns per cubic meter of air breathed to 0.5 microns. There is a strong possibility that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration may adopt this recommendation. If it does, the obvious solution is respiratory protection, which the roofing industry should already address as this solution is fraught with concerns.

Proper use of glass mat gypsum
Article Abstract:
The 1/4-inch-thick glass-faced Dens-Deck gypsum board is highly resistant to flame penetration. Thus, it has been beneficially used as a recover board over existing, fire-rated roof assemblies. However, tests have revelaed that the 2000 F flame could quickly cause calcination on the top surface of the gypsum board and degrade the glass facer as well. Alternatives to be considered include the use of asphalt primer or factory applied base sheets.
