Steady drop in boating fatalities is no accident
Article Abstract:
Marine-related fatalities in the US will continue to decline in 2000, as the Coast Guard Office of Boating Safety forecasts around 700 boating deaths for the year. The forecast is based on a total of 593 fatalities reported through September. In the past three years, 821 deaths were reported in 1997, 815 in 1998 and 724 in 1999. Boating fatalities continue to drop despite an increase in registered boats, which rose from 3.5 million in 1962 to 12.7 million in 1999.

Boating to have a voice in Lake Ontario ruling
Article Abstract:
Recreational boating may finally get the same rights as marinas and boaters concerning the regulation of water outflows in the Lake Ontario-St Lawrence River system after Pres Clinton approved funding of a study by the International Joint Commission (IJC). An earlier study done by the IJC in Oct 1999 recommended the inclusion of boating and environmental concerns in the criteria used in governing Lake Ontario.
