Undue influence
Article Abstract:
It is common in the UK construction industry to come across people who feel that they are free to ignore contracts. They involve themselves closely in the progress of work on site, giving instructions of their own accord to engineers, main contractors and subcontractors and failing to follow contract terms. Those to whom they give orders tend to simply obey, as they cannot afford not to do so. Events relating to the collapse of a roof at Ford Motor Co highlight the importance of having the courage to stand up to such people if they issue instructions that are clearly inappropriate.

Squeak to oil the wheels of payment
Article Abstract:
A recent EC conference on the topic of late payments in industry failed to reach a conclusion as to how the problem could be solved and also found that the European Commission was the worst late payer. Building contractors pursuing late payments for work should keep on complaining, and if they get no results they should continue pressurising people further along the chain until they reach the chairman.
