Article Abstract:

A survey looked at the service of electrical retailers, including major chains such as Argos, Comet, Co-op, Dixons, Powerhouse, Tempo and Currys. Over a third of people surveyed wanted a wide choice of delivery times, and in 52% of cases local retailers provided a specific delivery time. However the larger chains and department stores were not so likely to offer precise times. Many appliances needed installing and one in three companies offer installation, with local retailers performing better than most. Most surveyed felt that after sales service could be improved. A guide to minimizing the risks of undue problems after purchasing an appliance is provided.

Article Abstract:

A survey of 177 major electrical chains and independent electrical stores in the UK indicates that there are considerable variations in the standards of service at these outlets. In some cases, service was extremely poor. It was common for sales assistants to ignore customers, preferring to chat to each other, and many failed to demonstrate a particular feature when specifically asked to do so. At almost a third of stores, the shopper was not approached within five minutes of entering.
