Combine machines incorporating a telephone, thermal fax and answering service, such as the Brother Fax 520DT, can be very useful for small businesses. However, some of these machines have a limited recording time for incoming messages. This is the case with the Brother Fax 520DT, which can receive up to 15 minutes of incoming messages, but each message can only last one minute. The Philips HFC171 has a programmable message time of 30, 60 or 90 seconds, and programming is also a feature with the Ricoh FAX 125, which also allows the message to be left to record as long as necessary.

Some models are advertised in magazines and in specialist mail order companies. If buying through a dealer it is important to choose a dealer carefully as knowledge levels vary. Personal computers are to be found in most offices and standalone faxes can be linked to them using special software to transform them into multifunction devices that are able to print and scan as well as send faxes. PC-fax allows users to send computer-generated documents and make use of the computer to store a contact directory. However, hand-written documents cannot be faxed. The advantages and disadvantages of multifunction devices are discussed.
