Buying bulbs
Article Abstract:
There are a number of factors to take into account when purchasing bulbs. It is important to purchase spring bulbs before mid-October, as the best ones will be sold by this time. Bulbs must be undamaged, and should not be shrivelled or sprouting. It is worth considering tulips and daffodils, which produce attractive border displays, but smaller bulbs such as scilla, crocus and anemones can also be effective. Bulbs must usually be planted so that they are covered in soil by twice the height of the bulbs themselves.

Bulb basics
Article Abstract:
Garden bulbs can be obtained from garden centres, DIY stores and supermarkets and are available either loose or pre-packaged. Care should be taken when selecting bulbs, those with mold on should be avoided, as should those already in leaf. The main point to remember when planting bulbs is soil depth and they should be covered with soil that is twice as deep as the bulb itself.

Spring sensations
Article Abstract:
An increasingly wide variety of garden bulbs are available from nurseries and garden centres, but impulse buys are best avoided and purchases should be planned with care. If careful choices are made, spring colour in the garden can be obtained from January to May. Spring bulbs can roughly be divided into three flowering categories: early, mid-, and late spring.
