Cinema sound in the home: There are various ways of creating surround sound in your living room. We've compared the sound quality of home-cinema kits with DIY systems
Article Abstract:
A range of surround sound equipment kits and DIY systems were compared for sound quality. A Dolby Pro-Logic decoder, an amplifier and a set of speakers are required to get surround sound. Existing hi-fi amplifiers and speakers can be used with an add-on Dolby decoder, but the effect can be disappointing. All-in-one Dolby Pro-Logic TVs provided acceptable quality but were not as good as home-cinema kits. The best sound quality came from the JBP Power Pack Mark II at 900 pounds sterling and the Philips MX732 at 350 pounds sterling.

Armchair shopping
Article Abstract:
A survey of mail order catalogues including Family Album, Freemans, Empire, Littlewoods and Next Directory, found that all offered a phone ordering service, and some made an extra charge for packing and postage, although these costs were not always obvious. Ways to pay included spreading the cost over 20-38 weeks, without incurring interest, although some of the goods cost more than in the shops. Many people who buy by mail order have suffered delivery problems, with goods taking too long to arrive and damaged goods.
