Ergonomics and safe usage
Article Abstract:
Portable computers have many advantages for those on the move but their design may cause work-related upper limb disorders. A major problem is the keyboard size which requires some controls and numbers to be doubled up. Although the QWERTY layout is maintained, some keys are not in the usual place and layouts may differ. Some notebook manufacturers have responded to the design problems by allowing space on the keyboards for palm rests, making it easier to touch type. The pen computer is a viable alternative to a portable keyboard.

Communications and expansion. (portable computers)
Article Abstract:
Notebook computers can be linked to a computer network, send faxes and transfer data to an office computer using a mobile phone. The digital mobile phone must operate over the GSM or PCN cellular networks. A cellular data communications card is also required which will only fit in a PCMCIA Type II slot. Interfaces enable the computer to communicate with devices such as modems and printers.
