Holiday horrors
Article Abstract:
All tour operators are obliged to give a refund if they cease trading. The established bonding schemes the Association of British Travel Agents and the Association of Independent Tour Operators guarantee a refund and travel home if the firm goes out of business. Package Travel Regulations improve protection but there are no adequate enforcement measures. Small changes to holidays are acceptable, but significant alterations, delays, lost luggage, cancellations, extra charges and problems at the resort may merit compensation. Paying by credit card gives some protection.

Holiday insurance
Article Abstract:
Stand-alone insurance policies for holidays can provide the required cover when the small print is read. A table of best buys is given. Half the sellers do not have copies of the full policy or refuse to show them. Claims are mainly for cancellation or curtailment of holidays, some for medical bills and some for baggage loss. The latter may be covered by a house contents policy. Policies should also cover money and documents and personal liability. Some countries have reciprocal health agreements with the UK.
