A phylogenetic reconstruction of constitutive and induced resistance in Gossypium
Article Abstract:
Twenty-one species of the genus Gossypium were screened in the first-ever attempt to reconstruct the phylogeny of induced resistance to herbivory for any plant group. Induced as well as constitutive resistance were found to be both derived rather than ancestral traits. Induced resistance was observed in clades in Australia and tropical America, but inducibility was not noted in all clades from these areas. The likelihood of high levels of constitutive or induced resistance was also the same for island and mainland species. Finally, there was no evidence of a decreased likelihood of induced resistance in species that also had high levels of constitutive resistance.

The cost of defense against herbivores: an experimental study of trichome production in Brassica rapa
Article Abstract:
Artificial selection on trichome production in Brassica rapa was performed to analyze the life-history cost of defense. The interactionbetween the herb and Pieris rapae was used as a system in studying the fitness cost of trichome production. No fitness cost was detected with respect to flower production and survival in Brassica. However, high-trichome plants commenced flowering later. Selection for early flowering will therefore put high-trichome plants at a disadvantage.
