Magmatic modification of the uppermost mantle beneath the Basin and Range to Colorado Plateau Transition zone; evidence from xenoliths, Wikieup, Arizona
Article Abstract:
Researchers have investigated the elemental and isotopic characteristics of the upper mantle xenolith suite from Wikieup, AZ. Isotopic data for these xenoliths produces quite uniform values and indicates a common petrogenesis. It was concluded that the Wikieup xenoliths are related either by crystal fractionation from a magma resembling the host alkali basalt or by a partial melting process. In this process, the peridotites would partially melt to produce pyroxenites, gabbros and basalts. It is also possible that the xenoliths are related by a melt infiltration and metasomatism process.

Crustal xenoliths from Calbuco Volcano, Andean Southern Volcanic Zone: implications for crustal composition and magna-crust interaction
Article Abstract:
Crust underlying the Calbuco Volcano in the southern Southern Volcanic Zone (SSVZ) of the Andes have a significantly different geochemical constitution compared to younger SSVZ volcanic rocks. An examination of crustal xenoliths collected from the volcano revealed that they were composed mainly of pyroxene granulites and hornblende gabbronorites and were most probably amphibolite facies metabasalts from the middle and lower crust. These samples were found to have undergone dehydration melting and melt extraction before being entrained in andesite lavas.
