Discussion on the Oligocene Xanthi pluton, northen Greece: a granodiorite emplaced during regional extension
Article Abstract:
Rhodope regional geology is clarified by Zagorcev's criticisms regarding research on the Oligocene Xanthi pluton. While protoliths and deformation ages are uncertain, evidence of direct structural control on the pluton is inconclusive. Similarly, an assessment of the relevance of subduction, collision, orogenic collapse, and crustal anatexis, and the setting of the flysch facies near Xanthi was not undertaken. The time scale, comprehensivenessand the choice of radiometric dates used also determines the dating of volcanism, which is thus subject to various interpretations.

Variscan structure and its influence on post-Carboniferous basin development, Western Approaches Basin, SW UK Continental Shelf
Article Abstract:
A study to determine the kinematic history of the Western Approaches Basin in the south-west UK continental shelf was conducted using reflection seismic data. It indicated that thrusting and subsequent extensional movement of the Variscan basement caused the deformation of zones up to 3 km thick that were detected as packets of seismic reflection. The structures were interpreted to have formed in the Permian period and before the Upper Triasic.

Discussion on the Oligocene Xanthi pluton, northern Greece: a granodiorite emplaced during regional extension
Article Abstract:
I. Koukouvelas and G. Pe-Piper (1991) studied the intrusion of the Xanthi pluton suring the Oligocene. The following problems occur however, regarding the regional setting: dating of Palaeogene amphibolite-facies from K-Ar data, dating of nearby Palaeogene flysch-like sediments, contact of the Xanthi pluton with the latter Eocene sediments and crustal anatexis-triggered orogenic collapse.
