A household level study of the determinants of incomes and consumption
Article Abstract:
An evaluation of factors affecting household income and consumption, using UK micro data, reveals that income uncertainty is a major factor in spending. An average household's consumption is estimated to reduce a little over 5% given a doubled income variability. Variations in house costs, in contrast to the common notion, have little impact on consumption. Lifetime patterns of household income vary by profession. Households that are similar in some ways but located in different areas show major income variability.

Efficiency, equity and poverty alleviation: policy issue in less developed countries
Article Abstract:
Poverty is so pervasive in the sub-Saharan African and South Asian regions that poverty-alleviation policies embrace almost the whole range of development policies. Therefore, the efficiency-equity tradeoff at the center of mainstream policy economics has become the focus of policy debates on poverty. However, there may be instances where the efficiency-equity tradeoff may be false or exaggerated, which can have policy implications in terms of potential efficiency-enhancing redistributive projects.
