Absorptive capacity, coauthoring behavior, and the organization of research in drug discovery
Article Abstract:
The interaction between for-profit and publicly financed research in the pharmaceutical industry was examined using case studies and qualitative interviews. Analyses showed that a simple waterfall model, where the public sector generates the knowledge that cheaply flows downstream to researchers, is not truly reflective of the link between the public and private sectors. The public sector may also benefit from private sector findings. Moreover, the movement of information between the two sectors can be expensive and take time. Firms that want to use public sector research should not only invest in internal basic research but also cooperate with the public sector.

Market structure, R&D and advertising in the pharmaceutical industry
Article Abstract:
Different types of structural changes have occurred in the pharmaceutical industry. These include governmental attempts to manage rising healthcare costs, increases in the cost of innovation and rises in international regulatory harmonizations. These changes have promoted an effect on the competitive processes. Given the increase in advertising and research and development costs, it is forecast that changes will characterize competitive processes in the future.
