Adversity and opportunity: towards union renewal in manufacturing, science and finance?
Article Abstract:
Unions in the UK are experiencing dwindling membership and density due to high levels of unemployment and government hostility. Their formal organization is also being challenged by changing employment patterns and the de-centralization of bargaining. Between 1989 and 1995, trade unions have reported an 18% loss in membership, a trend which continues at present on account of the changed economic and political situation in which they are finding themselves in. By focusing on the union situations of the manufacturing, science and finance industries, the need for a more democratic and accountable unionism has been identified.

The British labour movement and economic and monetary union in Europe
Article Abstract:
UK participation in the European economic and monetary union (EMU) has been a controversial issue in the British labor movement. Although there are common concerns on the deflationary consequences of EMU and the Maastricht treaty 'convergence criteria,' the British labor movement's approaches to address these concerns are divided.

Article Abstract:
The financial services industry of the UK is undergoing a restructuring process brought about by changing business and market conditions.
