Opportunity knocks for Austrian firms(Austrian firms establish businesses in southern China and Hong Kong)
Article Abstract:
Approximately 800 Austrian companies have launched businesses in southern China and Hong Kong since 1977. Bilateral trade between Hong Kong and Austria totalled almost $1 billion in 1996, with Austrian exports to the region totalling $250 million and imports from the region totalling $740 million. Only 20% to 30% of Austrian imports to Hong Kong are reexported to mainland China.

Bay Networks has signed a deal with China's state news agency, Xinhua, which will provide a nationwide Intranet site. China's Intranet is aimed at business users and will deliver business information, e-mail, and some Web pages. Some Chinese students at universities gain access to the World Wide Web by using the identity and passwords of students in the US.

Cement usage between 1992 and 1994 remained constant worldwide but increased in China and ASEAN. Cement is often produced locally because it is environmentally degrading and moving it is difficult and expensive. Local production in China has risen from 308 to 400 mil tonnes, and many predict the rise will continue indefinitely.
