Aging in the early 20th century
Article Abstract:
The Union Army recruit sample is one of the latest data sets aimed at discovering factors which affect human capital such as developments in mortality and morbidity. The sample is comprised of some 36,000 individuals born in the years between 1820 and 1843 and includes detailed records of occupational patterns, health, family composition, living conditions, and death. The sample is important particularly in determining policies to benefit healthcare based on longitudinal evidence of chronic illness in populations.

Secular trends in the determinants of disability benefits
Article Abstract:
The determinants of disability were examined through the examination of data from a sample of Union Army veterans of the US Civil War and data from the New Beneficiary Survey of 1982. Economic, social, biomedical, and institutional factors were considered to understand how disability is determined in both sources. Results indicate a consequential change in the types of diseases which cause disability and show a higher incidence rate of chronic illness in modern times than in disabled Union Army veterans.

The changing view of the standard-of-living question in the United States
Article Abstract:
Most scholars of the 1920s believed that industrialization improved the standard of living. Scholars of the post-World War II period focused less on the changes in the standard of living and more on the explanation of the increase in living standards. Scholars working since the 1970s have focused more on issues such as the distribution of wealth and wages. Future research should explore issues such as the association between productivity and health measures.
