Black Days at the Pithead
Article Abstract:
Britain's National Coal Board was granted an injunction against coal miners picketing several mines in protest of mine closures and the 5.2 per cent pay raise. A national coal strike may be on the verge of happening, as a recent poll shows sixty-two per cent of the miners favoring a strike against mine closures. The government appears to be steadfast in its position and contingency plans, in the event of a strike, are being reviewed. Electrical power would probably not be affected by a coal strike for many months.

Notts v. Yorks: A Home Win
Article Abstract:
The mine closings at Derbyshire and Yorkshire, while the Nottinghamshire mines remain open, represent the divisiveness which the British National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is undergoing. Arthur Scargill, NUM president, is blamed for the union's problems. He refuses to call a national strike ballot which would allow the miners the opportunity to register their opinions. The miners generally would support the outcome of the vote. British police are on alert.
