European glassmakers are suffering from competition and overcapacity. The market for flat glass is in a slump. Japan and United States firms are moving in. Britain's Pilkington Brothers and France's Saint-Gobain-Pont-a- Mousson are in trouble. Graphs are included.

Spain's policy is edging closer to NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). The legacy from the Franco administration left the military and the farmers hostile to this policy. However, obstacles are being removed.

Abortion in Europe

Abortion is now permitted in most European countries. All have restrictions. Roman Catholic countries have been slower than Protestant ones to adopt the legislation.
