Breaking into Broking
Article Abstract:
Examples of banks in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain acting as brokers, and vice versa, are given. The changing situation in Japan, where banks and security companies are overlapping services, is described. In the United States, 'non-bank banks' are performing traditional banking functions. Examples are Merrill Lynch and Dean Witter.

The Baby Bust in Western Europe
Article Abstract:
Western Europe's declining population growth is caused by a growing death rate and sharp reduction in the birth rate. In the future there will exist an undesirable ratio of retired people to workers. This will mean increased demand for pensions and health and social services, while public revenues will be reduced.
