Choosing between a socially efficient and free-riding equilibrium: nurses versus economics and business students

Article Abstract:

Equilibrium selection in a laboratory threshold public goods game is affected by the type of subjects used. The game showed that groups of economics and business students tend to move toward an inefficiently strong free-riding equilibrium. On the other hand, groups of nurses tend to move toward an efficient threshold equilibrium. Such movement illustrated that students are far less cooperative than their nurse counterparts.

Gender and free riding in a threshold public goods game: experimental evidence

Article Abstract:

A public goods model was constructed to examine the hypothesis that women work more actively towards attaining the common good compared to men. The framework, an extension of existing work by Brown-Kruse and Hummels (1993), used a random sample of 500 males and 500 females from the students of a university. Results did not reveal any substantial differences in contribution behavior between males and females.
