Competition and market power in the European airline industry: 1976-90
Article Abstract:
An econometric model was developed to assess whether the high costs of European air travel can be attributed to the market power held by the airlines. Results showed that market power was a weak determinant of costs, but high cost structures were the root cause of high air travel costs. European airlines were found to be paying increasing costs, especially in terms of labor costs, with labor unions negotiating for higher wages than what is competitively viable.

The status of the core in the airline industry: the case of the European market
Article Abstract:
An empty-core problem confronts the airline industry of the European region. Utilization of Telser's empty-core hypothesis revealed that the existence of such problem can be greatly attributed to the imminent liberalization of the European airline industry. The hypothesis pointed out that resolution of the empty-core problem can be greatly achieved through horizontal mergers among European airlines and creation of superfirms.
