Cooperative investments and the value of contracting
Article Abstract:
An analysis of incomplete contracts yielded different results for cooperative investments and selfish investments compared to a uniform outcome for the two forms of investment in the case of complete contracts. The results showed that efficiency is realized if the parties involved agree not to renegotiate their contract. In case a commitment not to renegotiate a contract is impossible, then contracting has no value and ex post negotiation should be resorted to by the parties.
