Developments in the member states

Article Abstract:

Primary political developments which occurred among the member states of the EU in 1996, their ramifications on the EU and major EU issues debated among the EU member states are evaluated. For the federation, the year 1996 was dominated by the European Monetary Union, the Intergovernmental Conference and the continuing problems between the body and the UK. The member states were confronted with the need to change their attitudes toward the creation of a unified currency in terms of capacity and cooperation.

Article Abstract:

There were major political developments within member states of the EU that held ramifications for the EU in 1997. These developments included the general elections in the UK and France which returned center-left governments to power, political developments in Ireland, Germany and Italy, and the EU Intergovernmental Conference which resulted in the Treaty of Amsterdam. Further, several EU issues resounded in domestic debates within some member countries on EU policies and programs.

An analysis is presented on cooperation between European Union member nations, including bilateral relations, trade negotiations, and the impact of elections and political parties on these processes. Other issues covered include environmental policy, natural resources, immigration, civil rights, and government aid.
